GIGI Closing On Broadway!!!

keyart-about

Get ready for Broadway’s spring cleaning. After the Tony Awards, at least a couple shows close. While getting a Tony can boost a shows sales by 300%, leaving empty-handed can shut a production down. It seems that’s the case with Gigi- which will close on Broadway on June 21st. The show was only nominated for Best Supporting Actress (for Victoria Clark) and lost. Without a single award to it’s name, the musical couldn’t survive the summer. Vanessa Hudgens, who starred, was going to leave the show anyway to play Rizzo in Grease on FOX. Without her name on the billboard, the show’s a tough sell. Hudgens brought her fans (from High School Musical) but apparently it wasn’t enough. Most tourists are going to An American In Paris instead. While the show will shutter on Broadway, a National Tour is (as of now) still in the works.

GIGI First Look!

Gigi is a classic Broadway musical and whether you like it or not Vanessa Hudgens is playing the role made iconic by Audrey Hepburn. Of course, everyone had their opinions but now people can have something to base their opinions on as we have our first look at Hudgens singing some of the show’s beloved songs. We think she sounds alright, albeit fake. She’s no Audrey Hepburn and the musical seems a little dry but it’s not completely bad. I think Hudgens is the only one who could really bring the show to Broadway, but the question is still why bring the musical back. This season is filled with classic revivals and musicals based on classic movies. There’s VERY little original shows coming to the Great White Way and that’s a real shame. Corry Cott (in the horrid mutton chops) and Victoria Clark seems good in their respective roles. But the ensemble seems washed out by their costumes. This is an extravagant number but everything’s this nasty, purple velvet. I would have the dancers wear something that really pops, but what can you do? This musical seems like a pleasant revival. It’s not going to be around for long (I’d give it a year) but it might be decent while it lasts. Check out down below the High School Musical star singing “The Night We Invented Champaign” and decide for yourself.

First Look: VANESSA HUDGENS In GIGI

Vanessa Hudgens is on track to reinvigorate her faded career. She’s set for Fox’s live filming of Grease (she’ll play Rizzo), and now she’s one step closer to Broadway. Catch this first look at the High School Musical star in full costume as the iconic leading lady. We think she looks great. We’re totally on board with her second act as a star. She’s choosing the perfect roles that will make her adored (or hated). I guess we’ll just have to see how Hudgens will do. It’s showtime. The curtains up!

“High School Musical” Star Vanessa Hudgens Starring In “Gigi” On Broadway!?

Vanessa Hudgens is set to star in the Broadway bound Gigi at the Kennedy Center, as previously rumored. The High School Musical star tried to go all Miley Cyrus on us by shedding her Disney image with the controversial Indie movie Spring Breakers (which Selena Gomez) but it seemed no one really cared. But rest assured, everybody cares that Hudgens is taking on Audrey Hepburn, who originated the role of Gigi back on Broadway (in 1951) and who won an Oscar for the role (in 1958). Hudgens has done readings for the role but never has performed the show in front of the all too critical public. She had a forgettable turn as Mimi in Rent at the Hollywood Bowl, but this will really be her musical theater debut. She has the voice (kinda) and she could have the look, but does she really embody the iconic character? I guess we’ll have to see. Hudgens will take her first bow in January, so rest assured we’ll have you covered. The Kennedy Center run only lasts a month but this could be unforgettable. Hudgens will either be shockingly perfect or horrifyingly bad. And we can’t wait to see which one.
